Course Overview
Background of Superyacht Flyboard Instructor Training:
With the increase of water jet related equipment aboard superyachts there has been growing concerns within the industry about the overall safety of them.
The below course is strongly focused on health and safety and should give a superyacht crew the knowledge they need to safely operate and maintain the kit. We can also provide further consultation on the development of the operations manual surrounding this activity should it be required.
As there is currently no governing body over the activity of flyboarding or jetpack related activities, the course below has been designed as the ‘best code of practice’ when using the kit. Captains and Yacht Management companies can therefore show that they have applied a duty of care by undertaking some kind of training in relation to the equipment instead of simply purchasing it and putting it straight into action.
Onboard Flyboard Training Options:
In terms of the training we aim to deliver a course to a minimum of 2, maximum 3 of the crew and ideally they are already qualified PWC users as this can be run more as a conversion of their existing skills and knowledge on the water.
In terms of the installation of the board, in previous Superyacht Courses it has been helpful to have an engineer or someone who deals with the maintenance of the PWCs to attend the morning session as the Flyboard requires someone to remove the part of the PWC Pump which requires a bit of technical knowledge.
Flyboard Operator Course Modules:
Module 1 (Ashore)
Correct assembly, maintenance, connection to PWC, run through different methods of reaching operating area if in a tidal situation.
Module 2 (Ashore)
Safe operating areas (both tidal and non/tidal), safety management within operating area and adhering to operations manual.
Module 3 (Ashore)
Kit familiarization and safety check before each session including both flyboard and personal equipment.
Module 4 (Ashore & afloat)
Teaching the basic techniques of Flyboarding to course members, hopefully establishing a competent level of riding within session.
Module 5 (Ashore & afloat)
Teaching the basic techniques of safely operating the flyboard as the instructor from the PWC.
Course Duration:
The course can be covered in 1 day (1.5 days should the crew struggle to develop their own personal flyboard skills within the allotted time) with 2 – 3 crew.
Provision of Comprehensive Vessel Specific Flyboard Operations Manual
As well as providing the training we also offer a consultancy service to produce a Superyacht Flyboard Operations Manual. This manual will cover the operational procedures to safely use flyboard equipment onboard and a range of other important information including risks assessments, safety procedures and minimum operator qualifications. The Superyacht Flyboard Operations Manual is approximately 30 pages with additional forms and is supplied as a hard A4 file. The preparation of the manual can be done remotely by completing a provided questionnaire.

Superyacht Consultancy
Services
In 2007 the RYA introduced a basic Personal Watercraft Safety Course to be delivered onboard superyachts. The aim was to be able to certify guests using the jet skis onboard the yachts. There are currently over 400 yachts signed up to the scheme.
To deliver this training, the Captain / Chief Officer or Deck Crew of the superyacht will need to train as (or employ) a RYA Jet Ski (PWC) Instructor and apply for the yacht to be recognised as an RYA Training Centre. This will require the yacht to have an inspection under the lines of the RYA requirements.
New Wave Training offers a complete package which aims to bring any yacht and crew using jet skis (Personal Watercaft) up to regulated and recognised industry standards. Within this service we will assist with liaising with the RYA, producing a vessel specific RYA PWC standard operations manual, assist in the purchase of the right training equipment required to become a recognised centre and help prepare for RYA Inspection. Alongside our onboard training this is a hassle free complete package.
