EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Frequently Asked Questions
We offer a wide range of RYA-approved courses including Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) Proficiency, Powerboat Level 1 and Level 2, Advanced Powerboat, RYA First Aid at Sea, VHF/Marine Radio (SRC), instructor training, and shorebased RYA theory courses
A Personal Watercraft (PWC) course is the RYA-approved qualification required to operate a jet ski safely and responsibly. The course covers launching and recovery, low- and high-speed handling, man overboard recovery, collision regulations, basic navigation, emergency procedures, and essential safety knowledge. Successful candidates receive the RYA PWC Proficiency certificate, widely recognised by harbours, insurers, and hire operators.
No prior experience is required for most RYA courses. Many of our courses are suitable for complete beginners, with training structured to build skills progressively in a safe and supportive environment.
No — Powerboat Level 1 is not required before taking Powerboat Level 2. Many students go straight to Level 2, which is the most commonly requested qualification for boat ownership, insurance, and progression to higher RYA certificates. Level 1 is ideal for beginners or younger students, while Level 2 suits both beginners and those with some experience.
Minimum age requirements vary by course. Most Powerboat and PWC courses are available from age 12, with certificates for under-16s issued with age-related endorsements in line with RYA guidelines.
Our courses are run from our RYA-recognised training centre in Poole Harbour, on the south of the UK. We have a great location that means we can use both sheltered and open-water environments to provide realistic and effective training conditions ideal for both beginners and advanced students.
Depending on the course, you should bring suitable outdoor clothing, footwear that can get wet, and any personal medication you may need. Buoyancy aids and essential safety equipment are provided, and wetsuits are available where required. All the details of what you need to bring with you on your course will be provided in the joining instructions.
You do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable around water and able to follow safety instructions, including entering and exiting the water if required during training.
At New Wave Training, yes — when you book a solo rider slot, you have your own SeaDoo jetski for the entire day. You are not paired with another student and you do not take turns.
Most RYA training centres put two students on one jetski, which means roughly half your day is spent watching rather than riding. Our solo option gives you maximum time at the controls, faster skill development, and a noticeably better learning experience. It is one of the clearest differences between training with us and training elsewhere.
