RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship Course

The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course provides a clear introduction to navigation, chartwork, and seamanship skills for anyone new to boating or looking to build confidence on the water. It is ideal for leisure boaters, powerboat users, and those starting their pathway towards professional or advanced RYA qualifications.

Course subjects include:

• Basic chartwork, symbols, and nautical terminology
• Position fixing using charts, bearings, and simple navigation

• Buoyage, marks, and collision regulations (COLREGs)
• Tides, tidal streams, and weather awareness

• Pilotage and basic passage planning
• Use of electronic navigation aids and onboard instruments
• Essential seamanship skills and onboard safety
