What is a Personal Watercraft Course?

Let’s start with a confession. The RYA calls it a Personal Watercraft. You might call it a PWC. We almost always call it a jetski — because life is too short and everyone knows what you mean!

Whatever name you prefer, these small, powerful machines are brilliant fun but they’re also capable of getting you into trouble remarkably quickly if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s where the RYA Personal Watercraft Course comes in — and why we run them here at New Wave Training.

So… what actually is the course, who’s it for, and why should you bother?

Pull up a virtual deckchair and let’s explain.

First things first: what is the RYA Personal Watercraft Course?

In simple terms, the RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Course is a one-day practical training course designed to teach you how to operate a jetski safely, confidently and legally in UK waters.

It’s not about racing your mate or seeing how high you can jump a wake ,as tempting though that may be. Instead, it focuses on topics like:

  • Safe handling and manoeuvring

  • Launching and recovery

  • Collision avoidance

  • Local rules and maritime etiquette

  • Basic navigation and tides

  • Emergency procedures

  • How not to become that person at the slipway.

By the end of the day, you’ll understand both how your jetski works and how to use it responsibly around other water users — which is surprisingly important when kayaks, paddleboards, fishing boats and curious seals all share the same patch of sea.

You’ll also receive an RYA PWC Certificate, recognised throughout the UK and often required by harbours, marinas and insurance companies. This certificate can also be converted to the International Certificate of Competence if your planning on heading overseas.

Who is the course for?

The short answer is almost anyone. The longer answer is that the course is ideal if you are brand new to jetskis, have experience but want/need formal certification for harbour use or insurance, bought a PWC in lockdown and are still “figuring it out” or would rather learn properly than apologise.

You don’t need previous boating experience. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls. You just need to be able to swim and have a reasonable sense of adventure.

We regularly train everyone from complete beginners to seasoned riders who fancy brushing up their skills.

What happens on the day?

At New Wave Training, we like to keep things relaxed, friendly, and practical.

The day usually starts with a classroom session — coffee included — covering the essentials: safety equipment, basic theory, rules of the road, and how tides and weather affect your ride.

Then we head afloat.

This is where things get properly hands-on. You’ll learn things like how to control the jetski at slow speed (harder than it looks), turning techniques and close-quarters manoeuvring. You’ll also cover coming alongside without bumping everything in sight and how to effectively recover a man overboard. And of course, we are going to go a little fast.

Our instructors are RYA qualified, experienced, and very used to explaining things calmly while you accidentally point the wrong way.

No shouting. No pressure. Just structured coaching and plenty of time on the water.

Why take a jetski course at all?

Excellent question. Jetskis feel intuitive. Throttle go forward, steering goes sideways, what could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as it turns out. Most incidents involving PWCs come down to lack of training: poor awareness, excessive speed, or misunderstanding how these craft behave at low speed (spoiler: they don’t steer without power).

An RYA PWC course gives you:

  • Confidence

  • Real skills

  • Better judgement

  • Legal recognition

  • Happier harbour masters

  • Lower eyebrows when you look at the insurance quote

It also makes you a far more considerate water user — something the rest of the boating community genuinely appreciates. Plus, you’ll enjoy your jetski more when you actually know what you’re doing.

Why train with New Wave Training?

Because we’re not just ticking boxes.

As an RYA Training Centre, we focus on proper instruction, real understanding, and making the day enjoyable. We keep groups small, explain things clearly, and tailor the training to your experience level.

We also believe learning should be fun, that’s why we do it!

A quick word on terminology

You’ll hear “PWC” on official paperwork.

You’ll hear “jetski” everywhere else.

Technically, Jet Ski is a Kawasaki trademark. Practically, everyone uses it anyway — including us — because saying “personal watercraft” repeatedly feels like ordering coffee in Latin. We promise not to correct you.
