RYA Powerboat Instructor Training Course:

On successful completion of this course candidates will be able to teach Powerboat Level 1 & 2 Courses (and Safety Boat if previously completed this course) at an RYA Training Centre. As a Powerboat Instructor there is the opportunity with increased experience to work up through the RYA Coaching scheme, to an Advanced Instructor and eventually Trainer.

Course overview:

This scheme can be taught in a variety of small open powerboats such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats and is aimed at a variety of users from casual leisure boaters to professional small boat skippers. As an instructor you will therefore need to have experience in a variety of boats and situations. 

Day 1

  • Meet & greet, introductions, safety brief
  • Course structure & outcomes
  • Being an instructor
  • How to teach
  • Demonstrations and instructing on the water

Day 2

  • Delivery of pre-prepared shorebased sessions
  • On water training of ‘guinea pigs’

Day 3 ~ Moderation day

  • Introductions and discussion of days agenda
  • On to water delivering teaching sessions
  • Delivery of shorebased sessions
  • Administrative aspects of running a centre
  • Debriefs and course outcomes 

During the course potential instructors instruct sessions both on and off the water with regular debriefs with the trainer where we ensure that you are getting the key teaching points across on each session.

Duration : 3 days

Minimum age : 16

Pre-requisites :

Successful completion of the Pre skills assessment

Completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course

First Aid Certificate

5 years experience of boating or one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation 

RYA Instructor Code of Conduct:

All RYA Instructors are expected to comply by the RYA Code of Conduct when undertaking future training once successfully qualified.

We are more than happy to assist with logistics if travelling from abroad to undertake the course.
